Science Collaborative for Innovative and Enhanced Content Excellence: Middle School (SCIEnCE)

The Longwood University College of Arts and Sciences and the Institute for Teaching through Technology and Innovative Practices (ITTIP) at Longwood University, was awarded for Science Collaborative for Innovative and Enhanced Content Excellence: Middle School (SCIEnCE).   In partnership with six local school divisions (Amelia, Buckingham, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Nottoway, and Prince Edward), SCIEnCE provided sustained science professional development to twenty middle school teachers.

The teachers participated in a week-long institute at Longwood University focused on the integration of science content, the nature of science, using technology in the science classroom, and performance assessment strategies in order to improve their teaching practice and increase student learning.  Teachers strengthened their own science content knowledge during the school year and were part of an online professional learning community through the use of the National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) Teacher Learning Journeys.
